WRITTEN BY BEATRICE S. MATERU (BGY PARTICIPANT FROM LOMWE SECONDARY SCHOOL – KILIMANJARO - TANZANIA)

We visited the waste deport where we got a warm welcome from the manager. He then gave us a short history of the deport. He showed us the suroundings of the deport (industry). He started by showing us their shop where some good items which have been thrown away can be sold to the people who are in need of them at a very low price. We saw a lot of things in that shop like radios, TVs, music systems, DVD players, Play stations and many other things just to mention a few.We saw containers where garbages are put before they are sort out for recycling. All the garbages are separated according to their type such as plastic materials, wooden materials, timbers and other wastes.

The manager told us that the garbages which can not be recycled are decomposed. He showed us how the roots from trees are used in manufacturing manure which can be used in farms and gardens. We saw how ground water is separated from the waste water, and how the waste water is treated before taken to the sea so as to avoid pollution. In fact we had a good time and we learnt many things concerning the waste management. At last we thanked the manager and departed.
